Casting: What is a Casting Director and how can they help me?

As Tyrone Guthrie (and plenty of people since him) have said - 90% of every play is casting!

Between them Hannah, Wendy and Sam have worked across stage, film and television and with some of the biggest names in the theatre.

They will lead an interactive session for any actors, directors, producers and theatre makers in how Casting works, how to go about bring a company together, auditions, training – and anything else you want to ask us!

Hannah Miller has been the Head of Casting at the RSC since 2008. Previously Hannah was the Casting Assistant at the National Theatre, Deputy Casting Director at the RSC and Casting Director for the Birmingham Rep. Hannah is a proud Alumna of NSDF, and was a judge at NSDF17.

Wendy Spon: Currently freelance. Previously Head of Casting at the National Theatre 2006 to March 2018. Prior to this: freelance casting for Young Vic, Almeida, Playful Productions, Talkback Thames Studios; Deputy Head of Casting at the National Theatre 1995 to 2000; Casting Director for Crucible Theatre, Sheffield 1990 to 1995. Currently an Associate of Sheffield Theatres for Artistic Director, Robert Hastie.

Sam is a freelance casting director working in theatre, television and film. Her diverse projects include productions for the BBC, Sky, Warner Bros, National Theatre and RSC. For many years she worked in partnership with Gemma Hancock and in 2010 they were nominated for an Emmy for their work on the BBC miniseries, Emma.
