NSDF 20: The Collaboration between Writer and Director

Laura Wade and Tamara Harvey met as students at the University of Bristol. Their first collaboration with Laura directing and Tamara acting proved to them that they should never do either of those roles again - their first true collaboration was on SIXTEEN WINTERS, a play that Laura wrote and Tamara directed in the Bristol Old Vic Basement. Here they talk about collaboration, friendship and leaning on each other through the years.

Laura Wade is a playwright and screenwriter.  Recent plays include The Watsons (Chichester Festival Theatre and Menier Chocolate Factory), and Home, I’m Darling (National Theatre, Theatr Clwyd and the Duke of York’s Theatre) which won the 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.  Film work includes The Riot Club, adapted from her play Posh (Royal Court Theatre and Duke of York’s Theatre).

Tamara Harvey is the Artistic Director of Theatr Clwyd, where her productions have included the Olivier Award-winning Home, I’m Darling, Orpheus Descending, Pilgrims by Elinor Cook and Uncle Vanya in a new version by Peter Gill. Before Theatr Clwyd, she was a freelance director for 15 years, working on classic plays, new writing, musical theatre and in film. She is a graduate of the University of Bristol and trained in the USA.
