Introduction to Phonetics and Dialects

Phonetics is a science of sound and is the safest way to learn accents & dialects. It analyses how we make speech sounds and then modify them to produce the many varieties used in world dialects. We will start by checking out some phonetic symbols and then seeing, and hearing, how to apply this system to arrive at a Standard British pronunciation and then look at various American dialects.

Gary Owston trained as an Actor at The Rose Bruford College Of Speech And Drama, and Voice Teacher at The Central School Of Speech And Drama. He has worked in the West End, and both T.V. and film; currently at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he has also taught in America and most of the leading drama schools in England.
